Quick FAQ

Q - Will it be a really long day for my baby or toddler?
A - NO! I am a mom and I understand how tiring it can be for little ones to be in one place all day for 5-7 hours. We do casual wear and beauty wear right away, and then crown our 0-23 months and 2-3 years right away so parents can leave for their afternoon naps. We also hold our pageants in stroller friendly locations, so you are not stuck holding your baby all day (and exhausting yourself in the process!). You are welcome to stay and watch, but also have the option of leaving.
We also take a full 45 minute lunch break for ALL girls and families after baby crowning and then start with talent and go into full crowning after that.  There will always be somewhere on site, or within a few seconds walk to get food. At our Burnaby pageant, we have a BBQ set up in the parking lot by a family who is fundraising for a mission trip. At the Delta pageant, there is a restaurant on site of the hotel, or you can pack a lunch.

Q - What makes your pageants different?
A - Liz, the director and her daughter Megan run these pageants. Megan has competed nationally and they are both extremely well versed in the pageant industry and not 'rookies'. They know what parents expect out of the pageant, and Liz is always available via email or phone for any and all questions. It is not uncommon for Liz to spend 1-2 hours a day on the phone with different pageant moms who have questions. Liz takes a very 'hands on' approach with her 'pageant family' and wants to see ALL girls do well. She does not allow any family members to compete and will not allow any judging to be done by people who may know the girls personally. Everything is on the up and up, no funny business behind the scenes with tabulation, etc... Liz wants you to have a super fun and memorable day. Liz truly cares about her pageant system and each and every girl who competes!

Q - Do you offer cash prizes?
A - Due to popular demand, we are now offering a scholarship fund. All preliminary contestants must contribute $5 once per season, which will be put aside and divided among our 2011 Summer Finals Royalty.

Q – Is this a glitz pageant with fake hair, tans, makeup, etc?
A – No! This is a natural pageant that emphasizes natural beauty and personality! Our girls do not walk across a stage for a few seconds and get judged on looks. They introduce themselves into the microphone and also answer questions on stage to show personality. If they are too shy, they are not forced to do it, the emcee helps them out and they are still made to feel special on stage.

Q -Do you have supremes, mini-supremes, etc??
A - No, those are generally used in glitz or beauty type pageants. We have modeled our pageant after the successful pageant and youth development programs from the USA. We have an overall winner (1st) and a Princess (2nd) in each age category, and then all of the other girls are crowned 'Mini-Princesses'. We don't split them up into runners up at that point either so no one feels like they came in 'last place'.  We also give recognition to the one girl (will be one of the overall winners) with the highest points in the pageant.

Q - How big are your crowns and trophies?
A- At the preliminary level, where we keep it on a smaller scale, our tiaras/crowns are really pretty, but not HUGE (like the ones you see in Glitz pageants). At the summer finals we have some gorgeous tiaras and crowns being custom made for us with PINK stones! We are going to design the 'All Canadian Girl' crown that each overall girl will get and will be the same every year at finals. Our trophies are pink and really cute and about 12" high at preliminaries for the overall girls. and a bit smaller for our princesses. At the summer finals, trophies get bigger too!

Q - Can I sponsor your pageant with my business?
A - We always welcome family friendly sponsors who can provide prizes for our girls. We never use your prize as a door prize for the adults. All gifts go to our winners. All of our sponsors are from outside businesses, and we do not use the pageant as a front to sponsor ourselves with our own businesses (in order to gain more business for ourselves).

Q - What is the difference between Preliminary and Finals Pageants?
A - Preliminary pageants are done on a SMALLER SCALE. Smaller prizes, smaller crowns, smaller stage, etc.... These are to introduce the girls and parents to the process of the pageants and gain confidence on stage (and also possibly win your entry fees paid to the finals!). They are like 'practice pageants'. They are NOT big showy events. Our summer finals is the 'showy event'.  This is when you will see us go ALL OUT with decorations, custom round crowns, custom sashes, etc....
Prelims are really fun and a great way to meet new friends and get introduced to the pageant system!

Q- How many girls will my daughter be competing against?
A -We do NOT believe in having 20-30 girls in a category. We try keep our categories to about 10 girls or less per age group at the preliminary level, and a few more at the Finals level. We want to make sure every girl has a good chance of winning a special sash. Having more girls than that can make for an extremely long day for the little ones and even harder for the judges to make a decision! We aren't trying to break a record for having the biggest pageant in the world, we keep them smaller, family friendly, and very down to earth.

Q – What does my child have to do?
A – Ages 4 & Over will come out on stage in casual wear and introduce themselves into the microphone. They then come out later in a party or formal type dress & answer one simple & age appropriate question, and model their dress for the judges.
Ages 0-3 have a parent or guardian (or one of our teen girl helpers if you wish) bring them on stage in casual wear and a party dress. Ages 2-3 do not answer a question.

Q – Is talent required? If my child does not do a talent routine, will she still have a shot at winning an overall title?
A – Talent is optional. Talent competition is done AFTER all other areas of the competition are over, and scores are in, so that judges are not influenced at all. A girl not doing talent has just as much chance of winning an Overall or Princess title as a girl who does do talent.

Q – What can my child win?
A – At the preliminary level, there are crowns, sashes, trophies & finals entry fee prizes that can be won!

Q – What is the difference of Preliminary vs. Summer Finals, and do we have to attend a preliminary to go to Summer Finals?
A – Our preliminary pageants give a small taste of what we will be doing at the Finals level (to be held in August 2010). This is good practice for the girls and also a chance for them to earn their basic entry fees paid to the  Finals. If you can’t make a prelim pageant, we are happy to still have you at our Finals pageant.

Q – Do we need expensive & fancy clothing?
A – No, absolutely not! The casual wear portion is some sort of cute outfit that can be store bought or hand made. Many girls wear capris/shorts/skirts with a cute top and/or jacket, or a cute informal dress.
For Party dress, our ages 0-12 wear a dress that you would wear to a party or wedding Most girls this age do wear a short dress, but to avoid parent expense, we allow any length.. Ages 13 and over usually wear a full length dress that is similar to a prom dress, but you may wear a shorter dress if you wish.

Q – How do I sign up?
A – Email westcoastgirlpageant@gmail.com for the forms or go to the entry form page of the website.

Q – I can’t attend the preliminary pageant that is closest to us due to a date conflict, can I attend one that is out of our area?
A – Yes, you may attend any preliminary pageant in BC that you wish.

Q – If my child does not win, will she feel down and upset?
A – We don't have any 'losers'. Every girl goes home with a crown! We encourage all parents to bring their girls to the pageant with the attitude that this is a fun adventure for them, a way to enhance their self-esteem, make new friends and try something new. Winning the big overall prize is just a bonus. NO girl is ever a loser at West Coast Girl! Every girl goes home with a small crown and being told they did a job well done. It is up to the parents to prepare their child that they can’t always be the big winner. We want every girl to feel special & appreciated!

Q – Do I have to pay to enter optional categories (Best eyes, smile, etc..)?
A – No, these are included in your entry fee!

Q - Can friends and family watch?
A -Absolutely! We would love have them join us! Each contestant gets 1 free chaperone pass. General admission to the public is $5 for adults and $3 for children 3 & Up.

Q - Is my child allowed to enter other pageants in the area, or only this one?
A - You may enter any pageants you wish! This is not an exclusive contest! The more pageants, the more practice and the more fun!

Q - Do you support any charities?
A - We run a special Canada Day pageant for BC Children's Hospital every year on June 30th. Last year we raised over $4600.00.  We also hold a holiday toy drive pageant and our other pageant system, Dreamboat Dolls, sponsors families during the Holiday season. We feel it is important to support local charities that also help children, as this is a child based pageant!

Q - Can we enter more than one preliminary pageant?
A - Please see the entry forms for a full explanation on this.

Q - We want to try Glitz, where can we do that?
A - Please see www.dreamdollsworld.com for our Dreamboat Dolls Pageant!
